Privacy Policy

The short version: your training data is yours. We collect only what the app needs, never sell it, and store it in Australia.

Summary

The app is run by Respect The Body Pty Ltd (ABN 54 686 682 860), which is responsible for your information. Your training data is yours. We collect only what the app needs, we never sell your data or share it with advertisers. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles, and we give everyone the rights described below wherever they live, including under the EU and UK GDPR and California privacy law.

What we collect

Without an account, everything stays on your phone. Body progress check-ins (progress photos, tape measurements and the weights you log there) stay on your phone and are not uploaded, though logging a weight there also updates the body weight in your profile. If you have a coach and choose to share a progress photo with them, that photo is stored privately with us so only you and your current coach can see it; you can delete it at any time, and it is deleted with your account. With an account we store: your email address; your profile (name, a profile photo if you add one, body weight, rest timer, voice coach setting, weekly goal, optional Instagram handle, and if you add them, your year of birth, height and sex); your runs and walks (time, distance, pace, splits, estimated calories and the GPS route); your gym workouts; your training plan progress; and, if you choose to answer, your training goal, how you heard about us, and whether you want news and offers by email. If you have a coach, we also store the workouts and habits they set you, your habit ticks, your weekly check-ins, messages between you and your coach (including any voice notes you record), the reason and goal you write for them if you choose to, when you joined and left each coach, and which of your wins they have celebrated. We also store meal plans your coach sends you and the supplements you or your coach add to your list, with their doses and reasons. If you coach, we store the kinds of coaching you do, the bio and intro video link you add, the recipes you build, and whether you want an email when a client joins you. If you allow notifications, we store a notification token for your phone so we can tell you about new messages and coaching updates. Payments for coaching packages are made outside the app, on your coach's own payment page, and we never see your card details. If you buy a coach plan on our website, Stripe processes the payment; we store your plan, its status and renewal date and the Stripe customer reference, never your card details. If you join the community, we also store your suburb and postcode, your home gym if you pick one, the people you follow, group runs you post or join, and any reports you make.

Location

The app uses your location while you use it, never in the background except while you record a run or walk. During a run or walk (including when your screen is locked) it maps your route and measures distance and pace; your route is saved with the run. If you choose "Use my location" when joining the community, your phone (Apple or Google) looks up your suburb and postcode and we save only those. When you search for gyms or outdoor gyms near you, your location is sent to OpenStreetMap's free map servers (Overpass) for that search only and isn't saved by us. The weather on the Run screen sends a rough location (about 1 km) to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. If you make a buddy card, we save a rough location (about 1 km) to show rough distances. If you tap "Send my location" in a buddy chat, your exact location is shared with that person and kept in that chat.

Health information

Body weight, height, age, sex and exercise records can be health information. We use them to give you the app's features, such as calorie and fitness estimates and training history, and in totals across everyone (for example, how many members are in each age group). We treat them as sensitive. Only you and a coach you choose can see them; other community members never can.

Food and water tracking

Your food and water log, your way of eating (for example vegan or keto) and your calorie targets stay on your phone and are not uploaded, unless you have a coach and turn on Share my food log. Then we store a summary of your last 14 days (what you ate, calories, protein, carbs, fat, water, your targets and goal) so your coach can see it. Turning sharing off, or leaving your coach, deletes it. When you search for a packaged food or scan a barcode, the search words or barcode number are sent to Open Food Facts, a free public food database, to look up nutrition details. Nothing that identifies you is sent with them. If you use Snap a meal, the photo and any note you add are sent securely to our server and to our AI provider (Anthropic) to estimate the nutrition, and are not stored by us or used to train AI. We keep only a count of how many meal photos you use each day, to keep the service fair. If your coach uses the AI meal plan helper, the details they enter (such as goal, targets, way of eating, foods to avoid and, if they choose, your weight, height, age and sex, but not your name) are sent to the same AI provider to draft a plan, and are not stored by it or used to train AI. Calorie and macro targets, nutrition scores and vitamin and supplement suggestions are general guides for healthy adults, not medical or dietary advice.

Apple Health and Apple Watch

If you connect Apple Health, the app reads your steps, active energy, heart rate, resting heart rate, body weight and workouts so it can show your daily activity, bring in runs and walks recorded on Apple Watch, and improve your calorie targets. Steps, heart rate and weight from Health stay on your phone. Runs, walks and other workouts from your watch (with their GPS route) are added to your history automatically, or only when you tap Add if you turn automatic import off, and are then backed up to your account like any other session. Like your other sessions, they count towards leaderboards, challenges and your buddy card stats. We never sell Health data, use it for advertising or share it with anyone else. The app also saves your runs, walks, workouts and weigh-ins to Apple Health; you can turn this off in the app. You can change or remove access at any time in iPhone Settings, Health, Data Access.

Challenges

If you join a challenge, other community members in that challenge can see your community name and your progress (for example kilometres or workouts in the challenge period), and, if you picked a home gym, your progress counts towards that gym team total. Progress is worked out from the runs, walks and workouts you back up. You can leave a challenge at any time.

Training buddy finder

If you choose to make a buddy card (Community, 18+ only), other community members near you can see your first name, the photo you add, your gender, suburb, what and when you train, your level, your short bio, a rough distance (rounded to about 1 km, never your exact location), a COACH badge if you are a coach, and, unless you turn it off, a summary of your last 4 weeks of training in the app (km a week, average pace, longest run and number of workouts). You can choose to be shown only to people of your own gender. Messages are only possible after you both say yes. You can pause or delete your card at any time, which removes your card and photo.

How we use it

We use your information to run the app's features and back up your training. We also look at totals across everyone, such as how many people finish Start to 5K, which features get used, which areas are most active and what people are training for, to decide what to improve and which products and services to offer. These totals don't show who you are, and we never sell your data or share it with advertisers.

Emails from us

We email you about your account, such as password resets. We send news and offers only if you switch on "Email me news and offers" on the You tab. Every marketing email includes a way to unsubscribe, and you can switch it off in the app at any time.

Who can see what

You can see everything. A coach you join can see your name and profile photo, your training and body details (weight, height, age and sex), your check-ins and habit ticks, your reason and goal if you write them, progress photos and your food log if you choose to share them, the meal plans and supplement suggestions they send you, the supplements you list, and your messages with them, until you leave them. Coaches also see summaries built from this, such as how often their clients train and which sessions they finish; the admins of a gym can see these summaries for each coach in their gym. Coaches can also keep private notes about the people they coach. If your coach is part of a gym or business brand, you see the logo and colours of that brand; other coaches in that brand cannot see your training unless you join them. Community members can see only your name, suburb, postcode, Instagram handle and running distance on the leaderboard. People you accept as followers can also see your recent runs and walks (distance, time and pace), never your route maps, weight or home. Training buddies see what your buddy card shows, and the people you match with see the messages and plans you send them. Blocked people can't see you at all.

Where it is stored

Your data is stored securely with our database provider, Supabase, in its Sydney (Australia) region. Access is protected so that each person can reach only the data they are allowed to see.

If you live outside Australia

If you use the app from another country, your information is sent to and stored in Australia. A few features use services based in the United States: food photo and AI meal plan estimates (Anthropic), app notifications (Apple, Google and Expo), emails we send coaches about new clients (Resend) and maps (Apple and Google). Gym search uses the OpenStreetMap Overpass servers in Europe. The weather on the Run screen comes from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), which receives only a rough location (rounded to about 1 km) and nothing that identifies you. They receive only what each feature needs and may not use it for anything else. Where the law requires it (for example for people in the EU or UK), we rely on contracts with these providers that include standard protections for data sent overseas.

Why we can use your information (EU and UK)

We use your information to provide the app you signed up for (contract). We use health and fitness details, which the law treats as sensitive, only because you choose to enter or share them, and you can delete them at any time (explicit consent). We use limited technical information to keep the app secure and fix problems (legitimate interests). You can withdraw consent at any time by deleting the information, turning the feature off or deleting your account.

California and other US states

We do not sell or share your personal information for targeted advertising, and we never have. We collect the categories described in "What we collect" for the purposes in "How we use it". You have the right to know what we hold, to get a copy, to correct it and to delete it, and we will not treat you differently for using these rights.

Keeping and deleting

We keep your data while you have an account. When you delete your account in the app, your account and everything stored online is deleted. The copy on your phone stays until you delete the app.

Your choices and rights

You can download a copy of your data or delete your account from the You tab, leave the community or your coach at any time, and turn off location in your phone's settings. To ask for access or a correction, or to make a privacy complaint, email support@respectthebodyapp.com. We reply within 30 days. You can also object to or ask us to limit how we use your information, or ask for your data in a portable format (the download on the You tab does this). If you're not happy with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au), or your local data protection authority if you live elsewhere (for example the UK Information Commissioner's Office or your EU country's regulator).

Changes

If we change how we handle your information, we will update this policy and tell you in the app.
